ETEC’s counseling candidate guide lists six domains and 16 standards. Foundations, theories and methods carry 21.3%; developmental characteristics 14.7%; information-gathering tools 10.6%; counseling programmes 22.6%; professional development 12%; and ethical and professional responsibilities 18.8%. These are domain weights, not a guarantee that a particular question will appear.
Connect theories with school cases
For each theory, identify its explanation of a problem, the counselor’s role and a suitable technique. Practise distinguishing reinforcement from punishment, a student’s thought from a fact, and developmental support from help for an existing difficulty. In a case question, use the information given rather than adding a diagnosis the case does not establish.
Use information to plan and evaluate
Review interviews, observation, questionnaires and measurement concepts together. Ask what each tool can establish, where bias may enter and which additional information is needed. Link programme objectives to observable outcomes; distinguish running an activity from demonstrating an improvement.
Keep the two tests separate
The counseling specialty test is separate from the General Educational Test. The specialty guide’s table totals 75 questions; ETEC’s current general FAQ says specialty tests vary from 60 to 88 by specialty. The licence requires both test results as well as the applicable qualification and experience conditions.
