Study material sample: Patient Data
Summary
Patient Data is 30% of the SRCLE. It tests how you gather and interpret the record, bedside assessment, imaging, blood gases, pulmonary function, sleep and neonatal data, and how you recommend further tests. Read every value against the patient in front of you.
What the exam focuses on
- Interpret ABGs in order: pH, PaCO2, HCO3-, then oxygenation and compensation.
- Separate obstructive from restrictive patterns with FEV1/FVC, TLC and DLCO.
- Link bedside findings such as breath sounds, tracheal position and percussion to a likely cause.
Common traps
- A normal SpO2 does not exclude hypoventilation or CO poisoning.
- A low FEV1 alone does not mean obstruction; check the FEV1/FVC ratio.
- Do not treat a monitor reading before you check the patient and the sensor.
