Study material sample: Pharmacy Calculation

Summary

Pharmacy Calculation is about 16% of the SCFHS pharmacy technician exam (roughly 24 of 150 items). You must convert units, calculate weight- and BSA-based doses, work out quantity and days' supply, handle percentage strength and dilution, use alligation, set IV flow rates, and do basic pharmacy business math. Show every step and keep units consistent.

What the exam focuses on

  • Metric and household conversions; ratio-proportion and dimensional analysis.
  • mg/kg and BSA (Mosteller) dose calculations, including rounded safe doses.
  • Quantity to dispense and days' supply from sig and package size.
Show 4 more
  • Percentage strength (w/v, w/w, v/v), ratio strength and C1V1 = C2V2 dilution.
  • Alligation medial for mixing two strengths to a desired middle strength.
  • IV flow rate (mL/h), drip rate (gtt/min) and infusion time.
  • Markup, selling price, discount and inventory turnover basics.

Common traps

  • Confusing lb and kg: divide lb by 2.2 to get kg; multiplying by 2.2 gives pounds, not kilograms.
  • Mixing mg and mcg: 1 mg = 1000 mcg. Moving the decimal the wrong way under- or overdoses by 1000-fold.
  • Using weight in pounds inside an mg/kg formula without converting first.
Show 4 more
  • Days' supply = total units ÷ (units per dose × doses per day). Forgetting doses per day inflates days' supply.
  • % w/v is g/100 mL, not mg/mL unless you convert. 1% w/v = 1 g/100 mL = 10 mg/mL.
  • Drop factor (gtt/mL) must match the set in use; using 10 when the set is 60 underestimates the drip rate six-fold.
  • Alligation parts are relative amounts of the stronger and weaker products, not absolute volumes until you scale them.

What is 1% w/v in mg/mL?

10 mg/mL.

C1V1 = C2V2 solves what?

Dilution or concentration changes.

Drip rate formula (gtt/min)?

(mL/h × drop factor) ÷ 60.

Alligation parts represent what?

Relative amounts of higher and lower strength products.
