Study material sample: Fundamentals of Clinical Nutrition
Summary
Build a clinical reasoning foundation by linking nutrient function with assessment, calculations, evidence appraisal and safe communication. Interpret findings in context: a screening result, isolated laboratory value or statistically significant association is not a complete diagnosis. Practice the calculations with units before applying a disease-specific prescription.
What the exam focuses on
- Link vitamin-derived coenzymes to metabolic functions rather than memorizing vitamin names alone.
- Distinguish nutrient deficiency, excessive supplementation and conditions that impair absorption.
- Combine intake, anthropometry, clinical findings and appropriate laboratory tests.
Show 4 more
- Set up every calculation as an equation, retain units and round only at the end.
- Recognize study design, effect measures, diagnostic performance and uncertainty.
- Respect informed choice, confidentiality, language needs and culturally suitable plans.
- Review medications and supplements together, then coordinate changes with the prescribing team.
Common traps
- RDA, EAR, AI and UL answer different questions. The UL is not a daily intake goal.
- A normal BMI does not exclude muscle loss; adult fixed BMI categories do not replace pediatric growth assessment.
- Albumin and prealbumin are affected by inflammation and should not be used as proxies for muscle or total body protein.
Show 4 more
- Total compound mass is not elemental mineral mass; sodium mass is not salt mass.
- A risk ratio has a null value of 1. Statistical significance alone establishes neither causality nor clinical importance.
- A yes/no question about understanding does not replace teach-back. A signature alone does not prove informed understanding.
- A drug–nutrient interaction may require timing changes or monitoring, not blanket exclusion of the nutrient.
