Where other sources differ

  • This is the SCE exam run with Qiyas. It differs from the US FE exam by NCEES, which the SCE also accepts: the NCEES exam has 110 questions and costs SAR 1,500 to the SCE plus USD 250 to NCEES.
  • Roughly half of the civil part (28 of 50 questions) is structures, geotechnical and water resources, and the code extracts and tables you need are handed out in the hall.
  • Since the Professional Accreditation Guide for Engineering Categories was approved in November 2024, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam is required for the Associate Engineer grade, and the PE practice exam plus 5 years of experience for the Professional grade.

How to register

  1. Register with the Saudi Council of Engineers and hold an active membership; it is required to sit the exam.
  2. Wait for the SCE to announce the exam date and open registration, then register through your professional accreditation profile at the SCE or through the Qiyas portal.
  3. Register for both parts: the general part (90 questions) and your discipline part (50 questions). If your discipline is not on the list, choose "Other".
  4. Pay the fee for each part (SAR 400) and attend on exam day with your admission card at the centre you chose.
  5. After Qiyas announces the results, your pass certificate is emailed to you and you use it to apply for the SCE Associate Engineer grade.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Saudi Council of Engineers exam and who needs it?

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is offered by the Saudi Council of Engineers with the National Center for Assessment (Qiyas). It measures the core engineering knowledge of anyone seeking the Associate Engineer grade. Final-year students, fresh graduates and working engineers can take it, provided they hold an active SCE membership. It has two parts: a general part shared by all engineers and a discipline part.

Can I try SCE FE Civil questions for free?

Yes. Free questions: a 10-question diagnostic test covering the main units, no sign-up; at the end you get your score and your weakest units. The free practice test page lists the same questions with answers and an explanation for every option. The rest of the questions and the full mock exams come with a pass from SAR 26.

What makes this SCE FE Civil question bank different?

Question bank: full mock exams of 50 questions in 180 minutes, like the real test with a result for every unit, plus 330 explained questions across 9 units, every option explained, a review of your mistakes, and two ways to practise: see the answer right away, or sit a full timed mock. Every question is reviewed and referenced, ready to practise on your phone. Try the free questions and read the explanations before buying full access.

How many questions are in the civil part and how long is it?

50 multiple-choice questions with four options in 3 hours, with no penalty for wrong answers, according to the study guide. It is the second session after the general part (90 questions in 3 hours), and you must pass both parts.

What topics does the civil part cover?

9 topics, according to the table of specifications in the study guide: structural analysis 7 questions, structural design 7, geotechnical engineering 7, water resources 7, environmental engineering 6, transportation 6, materials 4, construction management 4 and surveying 2.

Is the exam in Arabic or English?

The exam is in English, according to the FAQ on the SCE website. That is why the questions here show in English first, with the Arabic translation and Arabic explanations one tap away.

Can I use a calculator?

Yes, calculators approved by the exam authority are allowed, and the formula and data sheets you need are handed out in the hall; books and notes are not allowed, according to the exam rules in the study guide.

What is the difference between the SCE-Qiyas exam and the NCEES exam?

The SCE accepts both for the Associate Engineer grade. The Qiyas exam has a 90-question general part and a 50-question discipline part, at SAR 400 per part. The US NCEES exam has 110 computer-based questions at approved centres all year, and costs SAR 1,500 to the SCE plus USD 250 to NCEES. The questions on this site follow the Qiyas exam syllabus.

Are the questions on this site taken from the official exam?

No. We wrote the questions ourselves against the indicators in the civil engineering standards in the study guide, reviewed each one, and every question names the topic and indicator it tests. The SCE does not provide sample question banks, and we use the guide's sample questions only to match the level, without copying them.

Is this an official site, and how do I pay?

It is an independent site, not part of Qiyas or any government body, and every question is reviewed before it is published. You pay once, with no automatic renewal, through Waffo Pancake (the merchant of record) by Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and your statement shows "WAFFO". If you were charged twice or the pass did not open, email support@saudiexams.com.

Study material sample: Structural Analysis

Summary

This unit covers structural analysis, about 7 of the 50 questions (14%). It starts with stresses: axial and torsional, then bending and shear, then combined loading with Mohr's circle, and buckling. Next come code loads (dead, live, wind), internal forces in determinate beams, frames and trusses, and influence lines. It ends with displacements and slopes by double integration and virtual work, truss joint deformations, and indeterminate beams and frames solved by the force method or moment distribution. Most questions are short calculations: you need to pick the right formula and know when it applies.

What the exam focuses on

  • \sigma=P/A for axial stress and \tau=Tr/J for torsion in a circular section (indicator CE-T1-01).
  • \sigma=My/I and \tau=VQ/(Ib): locate the extreme fibre and know where shear stress peaks (CE-T1-02).
  • Mohr's circle: principal stresses, maximum in-plane shear, and the generalized Hooke's law (CE-T1-03).
Show 5 more
  • Euler critical load P_{cr}=\pi^2EI/(KL)^2, effective length factor K and slenderness ratio (CE-T1-04).
  • Shear and moment diagrams for determinate beams and frames: the most frequent calculation type (CE-T1-06).
  • Method of joints, method of sections and zero-force members in trusses (CE-T1-07).
  • The Müller-Breslau principle for drawing influence lines and finding the critical load position (CE-T1-08).
  • Choosing the method for displacements (double integration, conjugate beam, virtual work), then the degree of indeterminacy and solution method (CE-T1-09 to 11).

Common traps

  • Mixing up I and J: I is for bending, and J (polar moment of inertia) is for torsion.
  • Forgetting that shear stress in a rectangular section is zero at the top and bottom and peaks at the neutral axis (1.5V/A).
  • Using I about the strong axis for buckling. The column buckles about the weak axis (smallest I).
Show 5 more
  • Applying Euler's formula to a short column. It holds for slender columns whose stress stays in the elastic range.
  • Counting with m+r-2j and forgetting that zero means statically determinate, not that the truss carries no force.
  • Placing the moving load at one fixed spot instead of finding the critical position from the influence line, where the ordinate is largest.
  • Confusing stiffness 4EI/L (far end fixed) with 3EI/L (far end pinned) in moment distribution.
  • Using virtual work without placing a unit load at the required point and in the required direction.

What is the bending stress formula?

\sigma=My/I, with the maximum at the fibre farthest from the neutral axis.

Where is shear stress largest in a rectangular section?

At the neutral axis, equal to 1.5V/A. It is zero at the top and bottom fibres.

How do you get principal stresses from Mohr's circle?

Centre \pm R, where R=\sqrt{((\sigma_x-\sigma_y)/2)^2+\tau_{xy}^2}.

What is Euler's critical load?

P_{cr}=\pi^2EI/(KL)^2, with I about the weak axis.

What is the effective length factor of a fixed-free column?

K=2.0 (theoretical).

When is a planar truss statically determinate?

When m+r=2j and the truss is geometrically stable.

How do you spot zero-force members?

An unloaded joint with two non-collinear members: both are zero. Three members with two collinear: the third is zero.

What does the Müller-Breslau principle state?

The influence line of any effect is the deflected shape produced by releasing that constraint and giving it a unit displacement.
