What is the pass mark?
60 out of 100. Multiple choice carries 75 marks and the essay questions 25, and your essay score must be at least 5 of 25 even if your total is above 60.
What topics does the subject cover?
Four topics with official weights: cost accounting (25–45%), management accounting (26–45%), accounting in government entities (20–25%), and non-profit organisations (4–10%).
Can I register for the managerial and governmental accounting subject on its own?
Yes. You register for one or more subjects in a single application and pay the exam fee (SAR 1,000 the first time, SAR 500 after that) plus SAR 300 per subject. A subject you pass stays counted for 4 calendar years and 30 days while you complete the others.
When is the next exam?
The 23 December 2026 sitting, with registration from 5 to 14 November 2026. The 2027 sittings are on 24 March, 23 June, 15 September and 8 December. Managerial and governmental accounting is in the morning and the business environment subject in the afternoon of the same day.
Do the questions here cover the essay part?
The question bank is multiple choice only. The essay part has its own guide that explains how to answer and how to split your time, with worked examples and model answers.
Which standards are the government and non-profit questions based on?
Government questions are based on the public sector accounting standards adopted in the Kingdom (the Public Sector Accounting Concepts and Standards Manual, 4th edition, 2025, built on IPSAS with the same numbering) and on the government accounting procedures that appear in SOCPA's practice questions. Non-profit questions are based on SOCPA's accounting standards for non-profit organisations.

Study material sample: Cost accounting
Summary
The cost accounting section accounts for about 13 of the 36 multiple-choice questions (weight 25-45%), one of the two largest sections in the paper alongside management accounting. It opens with the objectives of cost accounting and its link to management accounting, then cost concepts, classification, behaviour and the high-low method. Next is measuring production cost: absorption versus variable costing, overhead absorption and service department allocation. Then come job-order costing, process costing with equivalent units, contract and operation costing, joint and by-product costing, and finally just-in-time and backflush costing. Most questions are calculations, so learn the formulas and practise them.
What the exam focuses on
- Profit difference between absorption and variable costing = change in inventory units × fixed overhead rate per unit; when inventory rises (production above sales) absorption profit is higher, and when inventory falls variable-costing profit is higher.
- Predetermined overhead rate = estimated overhead ÷ estimated allocation base; applied overhead = rate × actual base. Applied above actual means over-applied; applied below actual means under-applied.
- Immaterial over- or under-applied overhead goes to cost of goods sold; material amounts are prorated across work in process, finished goods and cost of goods sold in proportion to their balances.
Show 4 more
- Service department allocation: the direct method ignores services between service departments, the step method recognises them in one direction following a chosen sequence, and the reciprocal method recognises them fully using simultaneous equations and is the most accurate.
- Equivalent units, weighted average = units completed + (ending units × ending completion %); under FIFO subtract (beginning units × beginning completion %). Cost per equivalent unit = relevant costs ÷ equivalent units, computed separately for each element (materials, conversion).
- Percentage of completion on a construction contract = cumulative costs incurred ÷ total estimated cost; cumulative revenue = % × contract price, and the year's revenue = cumulative less amounts recognised earlier. An expected loss on the contract is recognised in full as soon as it is foreseen (IFRS 15, paragraphs 35 and 39).
- Joint cost allocation: by physical units, by sales value at split-off, or by net realisable value (final sales value less further processing cost). The decision to process further compares incremental revenue with incremental cost only; the joint cost is sunk and irrelevant.
Common traps
- Confusing absorption and variable costing: fixed manufacturing overhead is a product cost only under absorption costing; under variable costing it is a period cost charged in full to profit. Selling and administrative expenses are period costs under both.
- Using units sold instead of units produced (or the reverse) for the fixed overhead rate and profit difference: the difference depends on the change in inventory, not on sales alone.
- Reversing the direction of the overhead variance: under-applied means actual exceeds applied, so settling it raises cost of goods sold, and over-applied is the opposite. The rate uses estimated figures, while the amount applied uses actual hours.
Show 4 more
- Mixing up weighted average and FIFO for beginning inventory: weighted average pools beginning-inventory cost with current-period cost, while FIFO keeps them separate and counts only the work done in the current period.
- Forgetting that materials may be added at a specific point (start or end of the process), so their completion is 100% or zero, while conversion accrues gradually. Also overlooking transferred-in cost as a third element that is always 100% complete.
- Treating spoilage: normal spoilage is part of the cost of the good units, whereas abnormal spoilage is charged to the period as a loss and excluded from product cost.
- Including the joint cost in the further-processing decision, or computing net realisable value from the split-off price instead of the final price less further processing cost.

What is the difference between a direct and an indirect cost?
A direct cost can be traced to the product economically; an indirect cost is allocated using a base.
When is absorption-costing profit higher than variable-costing profit?
When inventory rises, i.e. production exceeds sales.
How is the profit difference between the two methods calculated?
Change in inventory units × fixed manufacturing overhead rate per unit.
Formula for the predetermined overhead rate?
Estimated overhead ÷ estimated allocation base (labour or machine hours).
What does under-applied overhead mean?
Actual overhead exceeds applied overhead; an immaterial amount goes to cost of goods sold.
Which service department method is the most accurate?
The reciprocal method, because it recognises mutual services fully using simultaneous equations.
How are equivalent units computed under weighted average?
Units completed + ending units × their completion %.
What separates weighted average from FIFO?
FIFO keeps beginning inventory separate from current production; weighted average pools them.
