Study material sample: Professionalism and Medical Ethics

Summary

This unit covers about 15 of the 150 questions on the Health Assistant (Nursing) exam, or 10% of the score. It has three parts: Ethical Principles and Professional Conduct (autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice, appearance, reliability and professional boundaries); Medical Law, Regulations, Scope of Practice and Consent (the Health Professions Practice Law, informed consent, the right to refuse treatment, negligence and malpractice); and Confidentiality of Patient Records and Documentation (who may see a record, how entries are written and corrected, and incident reports). The questions are everyday situations: a visitor asks about another patient, a patient refuses a medication, or you are asked to do something beyond your role. Practice choosing the action that protects the patient and keeps you inside your scope.

What the exam focuses on

  • The four ethical principles (autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice) and what each looks like in a practical situation.
  • Informed consent: who obtains it, who signs for a minor or a patient who lacks capacity, and implied consent in an emergency.
  • Scope of practice: the health assistant works within the assignment, under the supervising nurse, and politely declines tasks they are not qualified or delegated to do.
Show 5 more
  • The patient's right to refuse treatment or medication, and the right response: no coercion, tell the responsible nurse, document.
  • Confidentiality: information goes only to those directly involved in the patient's care and is never discussed in elevators, corridors or on social media.
  • Documentation rules: chart right after the task, describe facts objectively, sign, and correct errors with a single line, signature and date, never erasing.
  • Elements of negligence: duty of care, breach of that duty, direct causation, and actual harm to the patient.
  • Incident report: written promptly with facts only, and not mentioned in the patient's medical record.

Common traps

  • Thinking the health assistant obtains informed consent. The provider who will perform the procedure explains it and obtains consent; the assistant may only witness the signature, depending on facility policy.
  • Confusing confidentiality with mandatory reporting. Confidentiality is the rule, but regulations require reporting certain things, such as notifiable diseases and suspected abuse, through the facility's official channels.
  • Correcting a chart error by erasing or using correction fluid. The right way is one line through the error, the word "error" with signature and date, so the original stays readable.
Show 5 more
  • Giving information about a patient to a relative on the phone because they "know the name". Information goes only to someone the patient authorized or the facility policy allows.
  • Forcing a medication or procedure on a patient because it is "for their own good". A competent adult may refuse; your role is to respect the decision, tell the responsible nurse and document.
  • Assuming small gifts from patients are always fine. Valuable gifts or gifts that could affect impartiality are politely declined, and facility policy governs the rest.
  • Carrying out a request from a doctor or colleague that exceeds your training because "it was ordered". If you are not qualified or delegated, decline and inform the responsible nurse rather than do it.
  • Charting before the task is done, or charting for a colleague. Document only what you did yourself, and right after it happened.

Autonomy.

Respect the decision without pressure, tell the responsible nurse and document the refusal.

Duty, breach, direct causation and harm.
