In short: 150 questions in 180 minutes, about 72 seconds per question. The pass mark is 50%, about 75 correct answers out of 150. Give most of your time to Patient Care (40%), then Assistance in Diagnostic Procedures (16%), and take a timed full mock exam before your date.
Before you start
Take the free questions to see which section is weakest, then start with it in the plan.
Splitting your time by weight
Divide your study hours by the official weights: Patient Care 40%, Diagnostic Procedures 16%, Professionalism and Ethics 10%, Patient and Environmental Safety 10%, Communication 8%, Terminology 8%, Infection Control 8%.
Four-week plan
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Professionalism and medical ethics, and patient and environmental safety (30 questions in the exam): ethics, consent and record confidentiality; falls, fire and first aid |
| 2 | Patient care, part 1: vital signs, hygiene and comfort, mobility, transfers and pressure injuries |
| 3 | Patient care, part 2: nutrition and intake and output, medication administration and wound care, special groups. At the end: first full mock exam |
| 4 | Infection control, assistance in diagnostic procedures, professional communication and medical terminology. Then your weakest 10 questions and the mistakes log, and a second full mock exam a few days before your date |
Each week, set aside two days to practice the sections you studied with the free questions and practice by section, and review your mistakes in the mistakes log.
Two-week plan
- Days 1 to 5: Patient Care (60 questions in the exam).
- Days 6 and 7: Assistance in Diagnostic Procedures (24 questions).
- Days 8 to 10: infection control, safety, professionalism and ethics, communication and medical terminology.
- Day 11: a timed full mock exam (150 questions in 3 hours).
- Days 12 to 14: your weakest sections and the mistakes log only, and a second full mock exam on day 13 if you have time.
The full mock exam
Take it in real time: 150 questions in 3 hours without stopping. If you reach 75 correct answers or more, you are at the pass mark level; if not, see which section pulled your score down and go back to it.
Question tips
- Read the last line of the question first: is it asking for the first action or the most important finding?
- In clinical situations, think about what a health assistant may do within their scope of work.
- Do not leave a question unanswered.
