Where other sources differ

  • The pass mark is 530 on the SCFHS 200 to 800 scale, not a percentage of correct answers. SCFHS set it in November 2019; the 554 seen on some websites comes from an older guide.
  • There is one exam for laboratory specialists covering nine sections with official weights: blood bank, clinical chemistry, hematology and microbiology (15–20% each), and urinalysis and body fluids, immunology and serology, histo and cyto techniques, laboratory operations, and patient safety and professionalism (5–10% each).

How to register

  1. Check eligibility: a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory (clinical laboratory sciences) or equivalent, and you are in or have finished your internship year.
  2. Apply for the exam on the SCFHS e-services platform (Mumaris+) and pay the fee.
  3. Once your application is processed you receive an email with your scheduling permit and its validity date.
  4. Book a Prometric test centre through the website named in the permit; you can book up to three months ahead.
  5. On exam day bring the permit and a valid passport or national ID.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are there and how long is the exam?

200 multiple-choice questions with four options, in two parts of about 100 questions and 120 minutes each, with a 30-minute break. Up to 10% may be pilot questions that are not scored.

Can I try SLLE Laboratory questions for free?

Yes. Free questions: a 10-question diagnostic test covering the main units, no sign-up; at the end you get your score and your weakest units. The free practice test page lists the same questions with answers and an explanation for every option. The rest of the questions and the full mock exams come with a pass from SAR 26.

What makes this SLLE Laboratory question bank different?

Question bank: full mock exams of 200 questions in 240 minutes, like the real test with a result for every unit, plus 1064 explained questions across 9 units, every option explained, a review of your mistakes, and two ways to practise: see the answer right away, or sit a full timed mock. Every question is reviewed and referenced, ready to practise on your phone. Try the free questions and read the explanations before buying full access.

What is the pass mark?

530 on a 200 to 800 scale. It is a scaled score, not a percentage of correct answers. On our site your result shows your percentage in each section so you can see where you lose points.

What language is the exam in?

English. So our questions are in English as in the real exam, every option is explained in Arabic and English, and you can show an Arabic translation of the question with one tap.

Which sections does the exam cover?

Nine sections: blood bank, clinical chemistry, hematology and microbiology (15–20% each), then urinalysis and body fluids, immunology and serology, histo and cyto techniques, laboratory operations such as quality control, safety and laboratory mathematics, and patient safety and professionalism including the Saudi health practice law (5–10% each).

When is the next exam?

The exam runs in near-monthly windows at Prometric centres. Registration is open for 1–24 November 2026, 1–24 December 2026 and 3–21 January 2027.

How many times can I retake the exam?

If you fail the first attempt you get two more attempts, then further chances open one year after your first attempt. If you pass you get two attempts to improve your score.

Is this site part of SCFHS?

No. This is an independent exam preparation site with no link to SCFHS, Prometric or any government body. Always rely on what SCFHS announces.

Is this an official site, and how do I pay?

It is an independent site, not part of Qiyas or any government body, and every question is reviewed before it is published. You pay once, with no automatic renewal, through Waffo Pancake (the merchant of record) by Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and your statement shows "WAFFO". If you were charged twice or the pass did not open, email support@saudiexams.com.

Study material sample: Blood Bank

Summary

Blood Bank is one of the largest sections: about 32 of the 200 questions, 15 to 20% of the exam according to the content guideline. It has six parts. The first covers genetics and blood group systems (ABO, Rh, Kell, Duffy, Kidd, HLA). The second covers antibody screening, identification and ABO discrepancies. The third covers the crossmatch and special tests such as DAT, elution and adsorption, titration and the pre-warm technique. The fourth covers blood donation and the preparation and storage of components. The fifth covers transfusion therapy, transfusion reactions and autoimmune hemolytic anemias. The sixth covers hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) and RhIG. The exam is in English, so learn the terms as they appear there.

What the exam focuses on

  • Forward versus reverse typing mismatches in ABO, and how each cause is resolved step by step.
  • Properties of antibodies in the common systems (Rh, Kell, Duffy, Kidd, MNS, Lewis, P1, I): class (IgG or IgM), reaction temperature and clinical significance.
  • Reading an antibody panel: ruling out with homozygous cells and applying the rule of three.
Show 5 more
  • When an immediate-spin crossmatch is enough, when an AHG crossmatch is required, and the conditions for an electronic crossmatch.
  • Interpreting the DAT: what it indicates in AIHA, HDFN and delayed hemolytic reactions, and the role of check cells.
  • Storage conditions for RBC, PLT, FFP and cryoprecipitate: temperature, shelf life and minimum content.
  • Telling transfusion reactions apart (acute hemolytic, febrile nonhemolytic, allergic, TRALI, TACO) and the first actions the technologist takes.
  • RhIG prophylaxis: dose timing, the rosette and Kleihauer-Betke tests, and calculating the number of vials.

Common traps

  • Mixing up warm AIHA and cold agglutinin disease: warm is IgG, reacts at 37 °C and the DAT shows IgG; CAD is IgM anti-I and the DAT shows C3 only.
  • Treating every positive DAT as a hemolytic reaction. Drugs, IVIG or maternal antibody can also cause it, so it is read together with the clinical picture.
  • Assuming Lewis antibodies cause HDFN. They are mostly IgM and do not cross the placenta, and Lewis antigens are adsorbed from plasma rather than made by the red cells.
Show 5 more
  • Forgetting that enzymes (ficin, papain) enhance Rh, Kidd, Lewis and P1 but destroy Duffy and MNS antigens, so anti-Fya or anti-M can disappear after treatment.
  • Applying one fix to every ABO discrepancy. Missing reverse typing in newborns and the elderly comes from weak antibodies, while rouleaux is cleared by a saline replacement.
  • Confusing a febrile nonhemolytic reaction (temperature rise of 1 °C or more without hemolysis) with an acute hemolytic one; the first is diagnosed only after the clerical check and DAT rule out the second.
  • Confusing TRALI and TACO: TRALI is noncardiogenic pulmonary edema from donor anti-HLA or anti-HNA, while TACO is circulatory overload with a raised BNP that responds to diuretics.
  • Stopping at the calculated number of RhIG vials: one extra vial is added after rounding. The rosette test is also mixed up with Kleihauer-Betke; the rosette only detects fetomaternal hemorrhage, while Kleihauer-Betke measures it.

What defines the Bombay phenotype (Oh)?

No H antigen, so no A or B; serum has anti-A, anti-B and anti-H. Only Bombay blood can be transfused.

How is weak D detected?

By the indirect antiglobulin test (IAT) using anti-human globulin.

What is the rule of three for confirming an antibody?

Three antigen-positive cells react and three antigen-negative cells do not.

What do enzymes do to Duffy and MNS antigens?

They destroy them, so the reaction can vanish after enzyme treatment; Rh and Kidd are enhanced.

Why is reverse typing missing in newborns?

They do not yet produce enough ABO antibodies, so reverse typing is weak or absent.

When is an AHG crossmatch required?

When a clinically significant antibody is present or is in the patient's history.

What if check cells do not agglutinate after AHG?

The negative result is invalid (for example poor washing or inactive AHG); repeat the test.

What is the DAT result in cold agglutinin disease?

Positive for C3 only, because the IgM elutes off the cells during washing.
