Study material sample: Information technology
Summary
The information technology unit has about 11 of the 50 questions in the Business Environment subject, and carries 15% to 29% of the subject according to SOCPA's weight table. It has ten topics: data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, blockchain, cloud services, big data, digital transformation, IT governance, continuous auditing and ERP systems. Most questions are conceptual: define a term, tell two close concepts apart, or pick the control that fits a threat. Each topic ties the technology to its effect on accounting, auditing and internal control, so study that link more than technical detail.
What the exam focuses on
- The four types of analytics: descriptive (what happened), diagnostic (why it happened), predictive (what will happen) and prescriptive (what we should do).
- Machine learning types: supervised (labelled data), unsupervised (finding patterns) and reinforcement (reward and penalty).
- The CIA triad: confidentiality, integrity and availability, and matching each threat and control to the element it protects.
Show 5 more
- Blockchain features: a distributed ledger, each block holding the hash of the previous block, immutability after a block is added, and smart contracts.
- The cloud service models IaaS, PaaS and SaaS, and how responsibility is split between provider and customer in each.
- The five Vs of big data: volume, velocity, variety, veracity and value, and the difference between a data warehouse and a data lake.
- The difference between digitization, digitalization and digital transformation.
- The five IT governance focus areas (strategic alignment, value delivery, resource management, risk management, performance measurement) and the difference between general controls and application controls.
Common traps
- Diagnostic analytics answers why something happened; predictive answers what will happen. They get mixed up because both look for patterns in data.
- RPA follows fixed, pre-set rules and does not learn from data, while AI learns and adapts. Not every automation is AI.
- A denial-of-service attack hits availability, ransomware blocks access to data (availability) usually by encrypting it, and phishing targets confidentiality by deceiving the user. Match each threat to the element it affects.
Show 5 more
- A blockchain does not guarantee that a transaction entered was true. It only keeps the record from changing once added. Wrong data that enters the chain stays wrong and stored.
- In SaaS the provider carries most technical responsibility, but the entity stays responsible for its data and for user and access management. Moving to the cloud does not move responsibility for the data.
- Digitization only converts information from paper to digital form and changes nothing in the process. Digital transformation redesigns the business model itself.
- IT governance is set by the board and senior management (direction and oversight), while IT management carries out the plans day to day. A question about who gives direction points to governance.
- Segregation of duties means one person should not combine authorization, execution and recording or custody. A programmer who can change programs and also run them in production is a control weakness.

What are the four types of analytics?
Descriptive (what happened), diagnostic (why), predictive (what will happen) and prescriptive (what to do).
What is the difference between RPA and AI?
RPA follows fixed rules and does not learn; AI learns from data and adapts.
What are the three types of machine learning?
Supervised with labelled data, unsupervised to find patterns, and reinforcement through reward and penalty.
What are the elements of the CIA triad?
Confidentiality, integrity and availability.
Which CIA element does a denial-of-service attack hit?
Availability, because it stops authorized users from reaching the service.
What is the principle of least privilege?
Giving a user only the access his duties require, and nothing more.
What makes a blockchain record hard to change?
Each block carries the previous block's hash, so any change alters the hash and breaks the chain, and copies are spread across many nodes.
What is a smart contract?
A program on a blockchain that executes an agreement's terms automatically when a condition is met.
