The business environment subject tests concepts and calculations, not legal text. It asks for price elasticity, the money multiplier, liquidity ratios, the cost of capital and net present value, then for concepts such as cybersecurity, blockchain and cloud services. The economics and financial management topics alone are 39 of the 50 questions in our practice tests, so start there.

The 3 topics and their weights
SOCPA publishes a minimum and a maximum share of the exam for each topic. The question counts in the table are the split of our 50-question practice tests, taken from the middle of each range:
| Topic | Official weight | Questions in our tests |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Information technology | 15–29% | 11 |
| 2. Economic analysis and concepts | 30–48% | 20 |
| 3. Financial management | 30–48% | 19 |
| Total | — | 50 |
Economics and financial management share about three quarters of the exam, and information technology takes the rest. The upper limit for information technology is 29%, close to 14 questions, so do not skip it.
Topic 1: Information technology (about 11 questions)
Ten subjects. Most questions are definitions and distinctions between similar concepts, with no calculations:
- Data science: the data lifecycle, descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive analytics, structured and unstructured data, data quality.
- Artificial intelligence: machine learning (supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement), deep learning, natural language processing, generative AI, how it differs from robotic process automation, and its risks in accounting and audit such as bias and lack of explainability.
- Cybersecurity: confidentiality, integrity and availability, threats (phishing, malware, ransomware, social engineering) and controls (encryption, multi-factor authentication, firewalls, least privilege).
- Blockchain: the distributed ledger, blocks and hashes, consensus mechanisms, public, private and consortium chains, smart contracts.
- Cloud services: IaaS, PaaS and SaaS, public, private and hybrid cloud, the shared responsibility model, and risks such as data sovereignty and vendor lock-in.
- Big data: its characteristics (volume, velocity, variety, veracity, value), NoSQL databases, the difference between a data lake and a data warehouse.
- Digital transformation and its impact on business: the difference between digitization, digitalization and digital transformation, and the effect on business models and audit.
- IT governance: the five COBIT focus areas, IT governance versus IT management, general controls versus application controls, segregation of duties.
- Continuous auditing: how it differs from continuous monitoring, embedded audit modules, computer-assisted audit techniques, test data, real-time alerts.
- Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems: modules and the single database, the benefits of integration, implementation risks, and the link to internal control.
Topic 2: Economic analysis and concepts (about 20 questions)
Twelve subjects covering micro and macroeconomics and currencies, with several kinds of calculation questions:
- The economic environment: the scope of micro and macroeconomics, supply, demand and equilibrium, open and closed economies.
- Elasticity and its applications: price elasticity of demand by the midpoint method, income, cross-price and supply elasticity, and the effect of elasticity on total revenue and the burden of a tax.
- Opportunity cost: sunk costs, explicit and implicit costs, the production possibilities curve, comparative advantage.
- Market structures: perfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly and monopolistic competition, by number of firms, product, barriers to entry, pricing power and the marginal revenue = marginal cost rule.
- Gross domestic product: the expenditure, income and production approaches, GDP versus GNP, nominal versus real, the GDP deflator.
- Economic fluctuations, unemployment and inflation: the phases of the business cycle, leading, coincident and lagging indicators, types of unemployment and the rate, the consumer price index, demand-pull and cost-push inflation, the Phillips curve, stagflation.
- Fiscal policy and its effects: expansionary and contractionary policy, the multiplier, automatic stabilisers, crowding out, the budget deficit.
- The monetary and banking system: the functions of money, the money supply, the reserve requirement and the money multiplier, open market operations, the discount rate, monetary policy tools.
- The foreign exchange market: spot and forward rates, direct and indirect quotes, appreciation and depreciation, hedging, cross rates.
- Exchange rate regimes: fixed, floating, managed float and pegged, including the riyal peg to the dollar at 3.75.
- Determinants of currency value: interest rate and inflation differentials, purchasing power parity and interest rate parity, the current account, political and economic stability.
- Balance of payments: the current, capital and financial accounts, the trade balance, and the rule that all accounts sum to zero.
Topic 3: Financial management (about 19 questions)
Eight subjects, and the most numerical topic. Most questions give you figures and ask for one result:
- Capital structure: operating and financial leverage and risk, the Modigliani-Miller and trade-off theories, loan covenants.
- Financial position analysis: liquidity, activity, leverage, profitability and market ratios, DuPont analysis, horizontal and vertical analysis, cash flow analysis.
- Financial valuation methods and their assumptions: the time value of money, net present value, internal rate of return, payback period, profitability index, discounted cash flow, the Gordon dividend model, comparable multiples and the asset approach.
- Sources of finance: bank finance, bonds and sukuk, equity, retained earnings, leasing, commercial paper, short-term finance.
- Components of the cost of capital: the after-tax cost of debt, the cost of preferred stock, the cost of equity by CAPM and the dividend growth model, and the weighted average cost of capital with market-value weights.
- Cash flow management: the cash conversion cycle, working capital policy, the optimal cash balance, receivables and inventory management including the economic order quantity, the cost of trade credit.
- The funding lifecycle: seed, angel and venture capital rounds, the growth stage, the initial public offering, dilution.
- Valuing pre-profit companies: revenue multiples, user metrics, the venture capital method, scenario analysis, burn rate and cash runway, the limits of discounted cash flow for early-stage companies.
The calculation question types
A calculator is provided in the hall, and you do not need to memorise tables. You need to know the formula and apply it fast. These are the types our practice tests cover, and each has a step-by-step solution:
| Type | The idea | Topic |
|---|---|---|
| Price elasticity of demand | Percentage change in quantity ÷ percentage change in price, by the midpoint method | 2 |
| Gross domestic product | Adding up by the expenditure approach (consumption + investment + government spending + net exports) | 2 |
| Money multiplier | 1 ÷ the reserve requirement ratio | 2 |
| Financial ratios | Current, quick, debt, profit margin and return on equity | 3 |
| Cost of capital | The weighted average of the after-tax cost of debt and the cost of equity | 3 |
| Net present value | Discount the future cash flows, then subtract the initial investment | 3 |
| Economic order quantity | The quantity that minimises ordering cost plus holding cost | 3 |
What the questions look like
In September 2025 SOCPA published practice questions for its professional exams that include the business environment subject. The questions in our practice tests for this subject come in three types:
- A concept: which statement describes a cloud service model, or what happens to a currency's value when interest rates rise.
- A calculation: figures are given and you find one result, such as an elasticity, a multiplier, a ratio or a cost of capital.
- A short case: the position of a company or an economy, and you choose the effect or the best decision.
