Where other sources differ
- This is the SCE exam run with Qiyas. It differs from the US FE exam by NCEES, which the SCE also accepts: the NCEES exam has 110 questions and costs SAR 1,500 to the SCE plus USD 250 to NCEES.
- The whole exam is in English, and more than a quarter of the general part (22 of 90 questions) tests general skills: analytical thinking, data interpretation and decision making.
- Since the Professional Accreditation Guide for Engineering Categories was approved in November 2024, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam is required for the Associate Engineer grade, and the PE practice exam plus 5 years of experience for the Professional grade.
How to register
- Register with the Saudi Council of Engineers and hold an active membership; it is required to sit the exam.
- Wait for the SCE to announce the exam date and open registration, then register through your professional accreditation profile at the SCE or through the Qiyas portal.
- Register for both parts: the general part (90 questions) and your discipline part (50 questions). If your discipline is not on the list, choose "Other".
- Pay the fee for each part (SAR 400) and attend on exam day with your admission card at the centre you chose.
- After Qiyas announces the results, your pass certificate is emailed to you and you use it to apply for the SCE Associate Engineer grade.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Saudi Council of Engineers exam and who needs it?
The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is offered by the Saudi Council of Engineers with the National Center for Assessment (Qiyas). It measures the core engineering knowledge of anyone seeking the Associate Engineer grade. Final-year students, fresh graduates and working engineers can take it, provided they hold an active SCE membership. It has two parts: a general part shared by all engineers and a discipline part.
Can I try SCE FE General questions for free?
Yes. Free questions: a 10-question diagnostic test covering the main units, no sign-up; at the end you get your score and your weakest units. The free practice test page lists the same questions with answers and an explanation for every option. The rest of the questions and the full mock exams come with a pass from SAR 26.
What makes this SCE FE General question bank different?
Question bank: full mock exams of 90 questions in 180 minutes, like the real test with a result for every unit, plus 508 explained questions across 14 units, every option explained, a review of your mistakes, and two ways to practise: see the answer right away, or sit a full timed mock. Every question is reviewed and referenced, ready to practise on your phone. Try the free questions and read the explanations before buying full access.
How many questions are in the general part and how long is it?
90 multiple-choice questions with four options in 3 hours, with no penalty for wrong answers, according to the study guide. A second session follows for the discipline part: 50 questions in 3 hours.
What topics does the general part cover?
14 topics, according to the table of specifications in the study guide: general skills 22 questions, mathematics 9, then 6 each for computer literacy, statics and dynamics, chemistry, materials science, engineering economics, project management and ethics, 4 each for probability and statistics and engineering drawing, and 3 each for thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and electricity and magnetism.
Is the exam in Arabic or English?
The exam is in English, according to the FAQ on the SCE website. That is why the questions here show in English first, with the Arabic translation and Arabic explanations one tap away.
Can I use a calculator?
Yes, calculators approved by the exam authority are allowed, and the formula and data sheets you need are handed out in the hall; books and notes are not allowed, according to the exam rules in the study guide.
What is the difference between the SCE-Qiyas exam and the NCEES exam?
The SCE accepts both for the Associate Engineer grade. The Qiyas exam has a 90-question general part and a 50-question discipline part, at SAR 400 per part. The US NCEES exam has 110 computer-based questions at approved centres all year, and costs SAR 1,500 to the SCE plus USD 250 to NCEES. The questions on this site follow the Qiyas exam syllabus.
Are the questions on this site taken from the official exam?
No. We wrote the questions ourselves against the indicators in the general engineering standards in the study guide, reviewed each one, and every question names the topic and indicator it tests. The SCE does not provide sample question banks, and we use the guide's sample questions only to match the level, without copying them.
Is this an official site, and how do I pay?
It is an independent site, not part of Qiyas or any government body, and every question is reviewed before it is published. You pay once, with no automatic renewal, through Waffo Pancake (the merchant of record) by Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and your statement shows "WAFFO". If you were charged twice or the pass did not open, email support@saudiexams.com.
Study material sample: Mathematics
Summary
Mathematics accounts for about 9 of the 90 questions in the General part, roughly 10% of the score. It has ten topics: differential and integral calculus, analytical solution of initial and boundary value problems for a single ODE, analytical geometry, matrices and determinants, vector analysis, and three numerical topics (bisection and Newton, Euler and Runge-Kutta, one-dimensional optimization). Most questions are short hand calculations that you solve in a minute or two, so the skill is picking the right rule and applying it quickly.
What the exam focuses on
- Find critical points from f'(x)=0, then classify with the second derivative: positive means minimum, negative means maximum (GE-T1-01).
- An inflection point needs f''(x) to change sign, not just f''(x)=0 (GE-T1-01).
- Area under a curve is the definite integral \int_a^b f(x)\,dx; geometric area needs absolute values where the curve crosses the axis (GE-T1-02).
Show 5 more
- A first-order linear ODE y'+p(x)y=q(x) uses the integrating factor \mu=e^{\int p\,dx}; separable ones use separation of variables (GE-T1-03).
- A second-order constant-coefficient ODE is solved with the characteristic equation, and the two constants come from the two boundary conditions (GE-T1-04).
- A matrix is invertible only if its determinant is non-zero, and addition or multiplication needs compatible dimensions (GE-T1-06).
- The dot product gives a scalar used for angles and perpendicularity; the cross product gives a vector whose magnitude is the parallelogram area (GE-T1-07).
- The Newton step x_{n+1}=x_n-f(x_n)/f'(x_n) and the Euler step y_{n+1}=y_n+h\,f(x_n,y_n) are computed by hand for one or two iterations (GE-T1-08, GE-T1-09).
Common traps
- f'(x)=0 does not always mean a maximum or minimum: for f(x)=x^3 the derivative is zero at x=0 but there is no extremum.
- Forgetting the constant C in an indefinite integral, or forgetting to change the limits when you substitute.
- In a first-order linear ODE, a common slip is not multiplying the right-hand side by the integrating factor before integrating.
Show 5 more
- Matrix multiplication is not commutative: AB\neq BA in general, and (AB)^{-1}=B^{-1}A^{-1} reverses the order.
- Mixing up \mathbf{A}\times\mathbf{B} (a vector) with \mathbf{A}\cdot\mathbf{B} (a scalar), and forgetting that the cross product changes sign when the order is swapped.
- In bisection, keep the half-interval where the function changes sign, not the one where the function value is smaller.
- Euler uses only the slope at the start of the step, while second-order Runge-Kutta averages two slopes; do not mix the formulas.
- Radians versus degrees: a calculator set to degrees gives wrong answers when you differentiate or integrate trigonometric functions.

When is x_0 a local minimum?
When f'(x_0)=0 and f''(x_0)>0.
What is the derivative of uv?
u'v+uv'.
What is the integrating factor of y'+p(x)y=q(x)?
\mu=e^{\int p(x)dx}, then (\mu y)'=\mu q.
