Summary

Read the passage as evidence. Locate a relevant sentence, compare its meaning with every option, and check the scope of the claim.

What the exam focuses on

  • Mark the purpose of each paragraph before answering a main-idea question.
  • For details, compare who, when and under what conditions. Similar vocabulary alone does not establish a match.
  • Distinguish a reported view from the writer’s own evaluation.

Common traps

  • Reject options that change some to all, may to must, or short-term findings to permanent effects.
  • A true statement may still answer a different question.
  • These short drills do not reproduce the sustained reading load of a full paper.

What makes an inference defensible?

It follows from stated evidence without adding an unmentioned assumption.

How do you test a proposed heading?

Check whether it explains the function of the whole paragraph rather than one example.
