Study material sample: Oral Anatomy
Summary
Read oral anatomy as a connected map: identify the tooth and surface, locate its tissues and support, then connect jaw movement, glands, nerves and landmarks to accurate observation and charting.
What the exam focuses on
- Translate tooth codes into patient-side anatomy and surface names.
- Connect each tissue, cell and attachment structure to its function.
- Distinguish normal landmarks from findings that require the dentist’s assessment.
Common traps
- Read a tooth code within its stated system: FDI46 is a lower-right molar, not Universal46 or a primary tooth. Use the patient’s side.
- Do not exchange occlusal with incisal,or mesial with the outward facial surface. A two-surface name needs two actual involved surfaces.
- Odontoblast cell bodies remain at the pulp edge; processes enter dentin. Enamel loss is not repaired by new ameloblasts after eruption.
Show 3 more
- Pocket depth and attachment loss have different starting landmarks. A deep reading with an enlarged gingival margin can be a pseudopocket.
- A chewing muscle is not automatically supplied by the facial nerve. V3 powers mastication; VII powers lip and cheek expression.
- Learn usual anatomy without making it universal: eruption order,root/canal counts and sinus/foramen positions vary. Clinical signs support assessment, not certainty from one clue.
