The SCFHS Dental Assistant guideline specifies 150 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours and a 55% passing score. It allocates 20% to dental assisting,15% to materials,10% each to anatomy, radiography, infection control and prevention,7% each to terminology and emergencies/medically compromised patients,6% to communication/patient education and 5% to ethics. Category shares may vary by up to five percentage points, and the guideline says content can change.
Build concepts before memorising answers
Trace tooth and oral anatomy, connect instrument names to their function, and compare the properties and uses of materials. For radiography, distinguish geometry errors from processing errors. For infection control, follow the sequence from safe handling and cleaning to the validated disinfection or sterilization method. Use the relevant chapter for the underlying rule and its conditions.
Practise decisions with their limits
Read the patient context and identify the assistant’s appropriate action, the need to alert the dentist, and any emergency response. Check whether a numerical or procedural rule depends on age, equipment, material or manufacturer instructions. For each error, explain why the key fits and why the strongest alternative fails. Do not replace current clinical guidance with a remembered slogan.
Review, then test pacing
Begin with a short diagnostic set, revise one domain at a time and return to missed concepts after a delay. Allocate more time to larger domains and repeated weaknesses while revisiting all ten. Once prepared, use mixed sets and full-length practice to check pacing:180 minutes for 150 questions averages 72 seconds per question. This is a study calculation, not an official per-question time limit.
