Fees and dates can change, so confirm them on the Teachers' Professional License page on the Education and Training Evaluation Commission (ETEC) website before you pay. This guide is independent: it is not affiliated with the Education and Training Evaluation Commission (ETEC), Qiyas (the National Center for Assessment) or any government body. We cannot register you for the test.
The teacher license needs two tests: the General Educational Test and the specialized test in your subject. You register and pay for each one separately. This page covers registering for the English Language specialized test, Level (1).
Confirm your level before you register
The English specialized test has two levels. They are different tests with different standards and weights, and the official sources do not fully agree on who sits which:
- ETEC's handbook: says Level (1) is for English teachers in elementary school (test taker handbook, page 4).
- The Ministry of Education's guide to specialisations for teaching posts (2025): asks for the English Language (2) license for English teachers at all three stages: elementary, intermediate and secondary.
So do not rely on the name of your stage alone. The level that counts is the one shown in your profile on ETEC's e-services portal when you register. Check it before you pay and before you start studying. If it differs from what you expected, ask ETEC or your employer, because each level has different content.
Fees
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| Specialized test | SAR 100 |
| General Educational Test | SAR 100 |
| Issuing or upgrading the license | SAR 100 |
The issuing and upgrade fee is set in Article 9 of the Professional License Regulations for Educational Jobs.
How to register
- Go to ETEC's e-services portal and open your beneficiary profile, or create an account if you do not have one.
- Register for the English Language specialized test during the announced registration window, and check that the level shown in your profile is (1). Your profile also shows whether your test is paper-based or digital.
- Pay the test fee (SAR 100) from your profile by bank card or credit card.
- Check the details of your confirmed booking in the same profile. You can change the date from there.
- Sit the test with a valid ID, and answer in English.
- Check your result in your profile once it is announced.
ETEC published a visual registration guide for the specialized test (2023 first edition) with a walkthrough for each step. The portal needs a login and we have not used it ourselves, so button names may differ slightly.
Changing your date
After paying, you can change your test date from your profile, with separate steps for a paper test and a digital test. ETEC's page gives the cut-off for changing or deleting a booking as 72 hours before a paper test and 48 hours before a digital test.
Dates
| Item | Date |
|---|---|
| Latest specialized test window | 18 to 31 October 2026 |
| Next window | Expected in late January 2027 |
Watch the announcements on ETEC's website, and register early when registration opens.
Results and the license
- Result validity: five years from the date it is announced.
- Both tests: a specialized result alone is not enough. You also need to pass the General Educational Test.
- License level: it uses the lower of your two scores, together with qualification and years-of-experience conditions. The thresholds in the regulations are 50 for Practitioner Teacher, 70 for Advanced Teacher and 80 for Expert Teacher.
- Issuing: the license is not issued automatically once your result appears, and issuing or upgrading it costs SAR 100 (Article 9).
The test is criterion-referenced with no deduction for wrong answers, so never leave a question blank.
