Fees and dates can change, so check everything on the Teachers' Professional License page on the Education and Training Evaluation Commission (ETEC) website before you pay. This guide is independent: it is not affiliated with ETEC, Qiyas (the National Center for Assessment), the Ministry of Education or any government body. It cannot register on your behalf.
In short: you register for the science subject test from your profile on the e-services portal and pay SAR 100. The license also needs the General Educational Test, paid separately at SAR 100, and then SAR 100 when the license is issued.
Fees
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| Subject test (Science 1) | SAR 100 |
| General Educational Test | SAR 100 |
| Issuing or upgrading the license | SAR 100 |
The test fees come from the FAQ on ETEC's page, and the issue or upgrade fee from Article 9 of the Professional License Regulations for Educational Jobs. Someone who passes both tests at the first attempt pays SAR 300 in total to get the license issued.
Science 1 or Science 2?
They are separate tests with different standards and weights, and the stage you teach decides which one is yours:
| Test | For | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| Science 1 | Primary-school science teachers | 26 standards in 7 domains; chemistry and physics together 38.5%, earth science and astronomy 14%, science teaching 12% |
| Science 2 | Intermediate-school science teachers | 31 standards with their own weights; chemistry and physics make up half the test |
The Ministry of Education's guide to specialisations for teaching posts (2025, page 11) says the primary stage requires the professional license in Science (1), and the intermediate stage requires Science (2) or a license in a single subject (physics, chemistry or biology). If you register for the level that does not match your stage, your result is for a test other than the one your post asks for, and neither test stands in for the other because their standards differ. If you teach intermediate school, your test is Science 2. This guide and our question bank here cover Science 1 only.
Registration steps
- Go to ETEC's e-services portal and open your beneficiary profile, or create an account if you do not have one.
- Register for the science subject test during the announced registration window and choose "Science (1)" if you teach primary-school science. Check that the level you register for matches the stage you teach. We have not tried the portal ourselves because it requires a login, so the subject's name there may differ.
- Pay the test fee (SAR 100) from your profile on the portal. After paying you can change or delete the booking within the deadline given below.
- Sit the test on the day with a valid ID (see "Test day" below).
- Check your result in your profile once it is announced.
ETEC has published a visual registration guide for the subject-specific license tests (2023) that walks through the steps with screenshots.
Paper or computer?
The subject test can be on paper or on computer depending on the subject, and your personal profile shows which one yours is after you register. The type sets your deadline for changing the booking:
| Test type | Last time to change or delete the booking after paying |
|---|---|
| Paper | 72 hours before the test |
| Computer | 48 hours before the test |
Test day
- Language: Arabic.
- Calculator: not allowed.
- Accepted ID: national ID for Saudis, iqama for non-Saudis, a passport, or a Saudi driving licence.
- Advice from ETEC's Science 1 guide: finish your review a day or two before the test, rest, eat a light meal before you go in, and check you have the required documents.
Results and levels
Scoring is criterion-referenced and wrong answers carry no penalty. The Regulations (Article 4) set the levels at these scores:
| Score | Level |
|---|---|
| 50 to 69 | Practitioner Teacher |
| 70 to 79 | Advanced Teacher |
| 80 and above | Expert Teacher |
The level uses the lower of the subject-test and General Educational Test scores, once the qualification and years-of-experience conditions in the Article 4 table are met. So with 85 in science and 55 in the General Educational Test, your counted score is 55.
Getting the license issued after you pass
The Regulations (Article 5) describe three stages: registering for the tests through the electronic system, sitting both tests and receiving the results, and then applying for the license. You apply at the level whose conditions you meet in full (score, qualification and years of experience) and pay SAR 100, and ETEC issues it. You apply through the Professional Licenses platform that ETEC's page links to.
The license is not issued automatically when your result appears, so do not delay the application. If you issue it within one calendar year of passing your latest test, it is valid for five years from the issue date; if you wait longer than a year, the five years run from the end of that year (Article 6).
Validity
- Test result: valid for five years from the date it is announced.
- License: valid for five years, and you can apply to renew it in its final year (Articles 6 and 7).
The next sitting and retakes
- Next sitting: expected in late January 2027 (see subject-test dates for 1448).
- Retakes: ETEC's schedule has a registration window for people who have not passed, so if you do not pass you can register for a later sitting.
Before you pay the SAR 100 test fee, take the free questions (10 of them) and see where you stand in biology (20%), chemistry (19.5%), physics (19%) and the other four domains. Then read what the test covers and its weights.
