This guide covers the English Language specialized test at Level (2), for intermediate and secondary school teachers. The professional license also needs the General Educational Test, which has its own guide on this site.

Level 1 and Level 2

English has two separate specialized tests. Level (1) is for elementary school teachers; it has three areas (pre-instruction 40%, instruction 48%, post-instruction 12%) and eight standards. Level (2) has four areas and 11 standards with different weights, and it is what this page covers. Make sure your test is Level (2) before you study from any source.

Where to start

Standards 6.9.1 (teaching language skills) and 6.9.11 (English linguistics) together carry 35% of the test, about 31 of 88 questions. Give them the most time, then move to the other pedagogy standards: 6.9.4, 6.9.3 and 6.9.2, about 21 questions.

Standard 6.9.11 splits into five branches (phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics), so each branch gets only about two questions. General reading is not enough; practise each branch on its own. Standard 6.9.7 is 4% (about 4 questions), so it comes last.
