01Choose the pair whose relation matches: أصنام : أوثان (idols : cult statues)

Past exam question Unit: Verbal

  1. Aرمح : سيف (spear : sword)

A spear and a sword are two kinds of weapon: members of one category, not synonyms.

  2. Bغابات : أشجار (forests : trees)

Trees make up forests: a whole and its parts.

  3. Cدروب : طرق (paths : roads) ✓ Correct answer

Idols and cult statues mean the same, as do paths and roads: synonyms.

  4. Dأبواب : مفاتيح (doors : keys)

A key opens a door: a thing and the tool that opens it.

02Choose the option that correctly completes the blank in the sentence: ندنو من ...... بقدر ما ندنو من التواضع. Meaning: We come closer to ____ to the same degree that we come closer to humility.

Past exam question Unit: Verbal

  1. Aالضعف (weakness)

Humility does not make a person weak; the sentence praises humility, so linking it to weakness clashes with its tone.

  2. Bالعظمة (greatness) ✓ Correct answer

Correct: true greatness comes with humility — the humbler a person is, the higher their standing.

  3. Cالغرور (arrogance)

Arrogance is the opposite of humility; one cannot get closer to it by getting closer to humility.

  4. Dالعزلة (isolation)

Humility draws a person closer to others rather than isolating them, so this word reverses the meaning.

03Choose the word whose meaning does not fit the overall meaning of the sentence (the options are the words in parentheses): يُعدّ (الاستثمار) الناجح مشروعًا يحقق (عوائد) في (الماضي) بمساعدة الموارد (المتاحة) في الحاضر. Meaning: A successful investment is considered a venture that yields returns in the past with the help of the resources available in the present.

Past exam question Unit: Verbal

  1. Aالاستثمار (investment)

It fits: it is the subject of the sentence.

  2. Bالماضي (the past) ✓ Correct answer

This is the error: resources are committed in the present and the returns arrive afterwards, i.e. in the «future»; they cannot precede the investment.

  3. Cعوائد (returns)

It fits: a successful investment yields returns.

  4. Dالمتاحة (available)

It fits: it means the resources that exist at present.

04A group of workers dug a pit measuring 3 m × 3 m × 3 m in 9 hours. How many hours will the same workers need, working at the same rate, to dig a pit measuring 6 m × 6 m × 6 m?

Past exam question Unit: Quantitative

  1. A72 hours ✓ Correct answer

Correct: the old volume is 27 m³ and the new one is 216 m³, which is 8 times larger; with the same workers at the same rate the time is 9 × 8 = 72 hours.

  2. B18 hours

18 assumes the time only doubles because each dimension doubled, but the volume grows by much more than a factor of 2.

  3. C36 hours

36 uses only the growth in area (4 times) although digging also involves the depth.

  4. D54 hours

54 comes from multiplying 9 by 6 (the new side length), which does not represent the change in volume.

05Three numbers are (3 + 2x), (3 + 2x) and (6 − 4x), and their mean is y. What is the mean of the two numbers 3y and y?

Past exam question Unit: Quantitative

  1. A12

This is only the value of 3y, not the mean of the two numbers.

  2. B4

This is the value of y itself, not the mean of 3y and y.

  3. C16

This is the sum of 3y and y (12 + 4) without dividing by 2.

  4. D8 ✓ Correct answer

    The sum is 12 because the x-terms cancel (2x + 2x − 4x = 0), so y = 4, and the mean of 12 and 4 is (12 + 4) ÷ 2 = 8.

06The table below shows how a car company's sales were distributed in a given year: Type | Share of sales Four-wheel drive | 13% Trucks | 17% Two-door sedan | 25% Four-door sedan | 23% Van | 22% If the company sold 5,750 two-door sedans, how many four-door sedans did it sell?

Past exam question Unit: Quantitative

  1. A6250

    This inverts the ratio (5,750 × 25 ÷ 23); four-door sedans must be fewer because 23% is less than 25%, i.e. 5,750 × 23 ÷ 25 = 5,290.

  2. B5290 ✓ Correct answer

    Two-door sedans are 25% of sales, so total sales are 5,750 ÷ 25 × 100 = 23,000, and four-door sedans (23%) are 5,290.

  3. C5060

That is the number of vans (22% of 23,000), not four-door sedans.

  4. D5635

This subtracts 2% of 5,750 (5,750 × 0.98), but the gap is two percentage points of total sales, not of two-door sales; the correct figure is 23% of 23,000 = 5,290.

07A researcher chose 17 physical education students and gave them three extra 60-minute sports sessions a week for a month. He noticed a large drop in their stress levels and concluded that exercise relieves psychological stress in people in general. Which of the following is consistent with a sound evaluation of this study?

Past exam question Unit: Critical thinking

  1. AThe study should be repeated on a larger sample from various majors before generalising ✓ Correct answer

The sample is small and drawn from one major already linked to sport, so it does not represent people in general; the study must be repeated on a wider, more varied sample.

  2. BThe result proves that sports sessions must be added to every school and university timetable

A small, biased sample is not enough to justify a general decision for every school and university.

  3. CThe result shows that exercise affects mental health more than it affects physical health

The study did not measure physical health at all, so the two effects cannot be compared.

  4. DThe study shows that students of other majors suffer more stress than physical education students

The study did not include students of other majors, so it says nothing about their stress levels.

08Assume the following statements are true, even if they contradict reality: - The giraffe eats the elephant, and it eats nothing but herbivores. - The lion does not eat the elephant, and it is afraid of all herbivores. - The tiger is a herbivore, and it is afraid only of those who are not afraid of it. Which of the following statements cannot be concluded from the given information?

Past exam question Unit: Critical thinking

  1. AThe elephant is a herbivore

This follows: the giraffe eats only herbivores and it eats the elephant, so the elephant is a herbivore.

  2. BThe lion is afraid of the tiger

This follows: the tiger is a herbivore and the lion fears all herbivores, so it fears the tiger.

  3. CThe tiger is not afraid of the lion

This follows: the lion fears the tiger, and the tiger fears only those who do not fear it, so the tiger does not fear the lion.

  4. DThe tiger eats the elephant and is not afraid of it ✓ Correct answer

Correct: nothing says the tiger eats the elephant, and we are not told whether the elephant fears the tiger, so neither half can be concluded.

09Lina, Suha and Amal received 21 prizes in total. Lina received twice as many as Suha, and Amal received fewer than Lina but more than Suha. How many prizes did Amal receive?

Past exam question Unit: Logic

  1. A5

This is Suha's number of prizes, not Amal's; Suha received fewer than Amal.

  2. B7

Not possible: if Amal had 7, Lina and Suha would have 14 together, which cannot be split 2 : 1.

  3. C6 ✓ Correct answer

Correct: if Suha received 5, then Lina received 10 and Amal received 21 − 15 = 6, which lies between 5 and 10.

  4. D8

Not possible: if Amal had 8, Lina and Suha would have 13 together, which cannot be split 2 : 1.

10Seven brothers are each exactly two years apart in age. The oldest is 36 and the youngest is 24. Muhammad is the oldest. Anas is 6 years older than Majid and 10 years older than Yusuf. Ahmad is older than Majid and younger than Faisal. (The seventh brother is not named.) Which brother is in the middle by age?

Past exam question Unit: Logic

  1. AAnas

Anas is 34, the second oldest.

  2. BFaisal

Faisal is 32, the third oldest.

  3. CMajid

Majid is 28, the fifth oldest.

  4. DAhmad ✓ Correct answer

The ages are 36, 34, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24. Anas is 34, Majid 28, Yusuf 24, and Ahmad, who lies between Majid and Faisal, is 30, the fourth of seven, which is the middle.
