The information here comes from the National Program for Gifted Identification page and the registration service page on Mawhiba's website, and may change, so check it before registering. This is an independent guide, not affiliated with the Mawhiba foundation, the Education and Training Evaluation Commission or any government body.
Mawhiba says some of its programs require a qualifying English score on top of the Mawhiba test score. If your child is in grade 3 (intermediate) or grade 1 (secondary) and is aiming for a program like that, this guide sets out the tests Mawhiba names. The Mawhiba Level 3 test score stays the main thing, and English is an extra condition for some programs only. What the test covers is in the content guide.
The accepted tests
Mawhiba accepts four English tests for programs that require English: TOEIC, STEP, IELTS and TOEFL iBT. According to Mawhiba, the body responsible for STEP is the National Center for Assessment, and the body responsible for TOEIC is AMIDEAST.
| Test | What Mawhiba says |
|---|---|
| TOEIC | For students who sat the Mawhiba test in grade 3 (intermediate) or grade 1 (secondary) and want programs that require English as an extra condition. It tests listening and reading. It lasts two and a half hours. The reduced fee for Mawhiba students is SAR 220. Run by AMIDEAST. |
| STEP | The English proficiency test, which lets a student be nominated for programs delivered in English, such as the Mawhiba Global Enrichment Program. Registration is through the Qiyas website. Run by the National Center for Assessment. |
| IELTS and TOEFL iBT | Also accepted. Mawhiba's pages give no details of their fees or conditions. |
TOEIC, step by step
- Who can register: Saudi students, and foreign students with a Saudi mother.
- Documents: the national ID or family card. Mawhiba says to check that the civil ID number and the ID or family card are correct, and that the student is responsible for the accuracy of the data entered.
- Fee: SAR 220, a reduced fee for Mawhiba students.
- Date and centre: booking details and technical requirements are on the AMIDEAST page that Mawhiba points to.
- Practice test: Mawhiba says there is a full TOEIC practice test, free of charge, at the link on its page.
- Result: Mawhiba sends the score by text message to the student's mobile number registered with it.
- Eligibility for the US universities program: according to Mawhiba, eligibility to register for the "Qualification for Excellence" program is updated four working days after the test date. If the score qualifies, registration opens for the student and a text message says so. No message means the score does not qualify.
If your child took STEP less than a year ago
Mawhiba says the score can be used when applying for programs. It is compared with the scores of students who took TOEIC after the two tests are equated, and the test is also open to students with a low score in their earlier language test who want to improve their chances. A STEP score is added to the student's file periodically, after it is received from the National Center for Assessment, so do not expect it to appear straight away.
How to plan
- The Mawhiba test comes first: English-program eligibility rests on its score and then on English, so do not put off preparing for it for the sake of a language test.
- Check the program you care about: each program sets the test it needs and the score on its own page. We give no scores here because the Mawhiba pages we checked set no single score.
- Do not book before you know: TOEIC costs SAR 220 and STEP is registered through Qiyas. Pick the one test that suits the program, and do not pay for two at once.
- English practice: to practise for STEP, see the STEP page on our site.
Results on our site are for practice only. They are not a Mawhiba score or the score of any language test.
