Last verified: 31 October 2026. Our source is the STEP page on the Education and Training Evaluation Commission (ETEC) website and the e-services portal. Fees and procedures can change, so confirm them on the site before you pay. This guide is independent: it is not affiliated with the Education and Training Evaluation Commission (ETEC), Qiyas (the National Center for Assessment) or any government body.

The test is digital only and available all year, so there is no registration window to wait for: you choose the city, test centre and time yourself. We cannot register you for the test. Registration is on ETEC's portal.

You pay this for each attempt, and the score you get is the one compared with the minimum your university or employer requires.

How to register

  1. Go to ETEC's e-services portal and open your beneficiary profile, or create an account if you do not have one.
  2. Choose the Standardized Test of English Proficiency (STEP), then the city, test centre and time that suit you.
  3. Pay the test fee: SAR 150 inside Saudi Arabia or SAR 200 abroad.
  4. Take the test with proof of identity, and without a calculator.
  5. Check your result in your beneficiary profile.

We have not tried the portal ourselves because it needs a login, so button names may differ slightly.

Changing your booking

You can delete or change the booking up to 48 hours before the test. So book a slot when you are ready.

On test day

  • ID: a national ID for Saudis, an iqama for non-Saudis, a passport, or a Saudi driving licence.
  • Calculator: not allowed.
  • Format: digital, on a computer at an ETEC test centre, with a listening part, so make sure you can hear the recording clearly before you start.

Score you needNo single pass mark: each body sets its own minimum

The score that matters is the one your own university or employer asks for, so ask before you book. The King Saud University table, for example, treats STEP 83 as IELTS 6, 75 as 5.5 and 67 as 5, but that is one university's table.

Before you pay

Before you pay SAR 150, take 10 free questions with no sign-up to see what you would score if you took the test today and which part is weakest. Then read what the test covers and its weights and the study plan.
