In short: the EPT costs SAR 100, and the test is digital and available all year, so you choose the city, test centre and time yourself. Results come 3 to 5 working days later, and you get five attempts in three years. We cannot register you for the test. Registration is on ETEC's portal.
Fees
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Test fee | SAR 100 per attempt |
| Changing or deleting the booking | Up to 48 hours before the test |
How to register
- Go to ETEC's e-services portal and open your beneficiary profile, or create an account if you do not have one.
- Choose the English Placement Test (EPT), then the city, test centre and time that suit you.
- Pay the test fee: SAR 100.
- Take the test with proof of identity, and without a calculator.
- Check your result in your beneficiary profile, then give it to the university or programme that asked for it.
We have not tried the portal ourselves because it needs a login, so button names may differ slightly.
Changing your booking
You can delete or change the booking up to 48 hours before the test. After that it cannot be changed, so book a slot when you are ready.
On test day
- ID: a national ID for Saudis, an iqama for non-Saudis, a passport, or a Saudi driving licence.
- Calculator: not allowed.
- Format: digital only, with a listening part (a quarter of the test), so make sure you can hear the recording clearly before you start.
Results and attempts
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| When results appear | 3 to 5 working days later (Sunday to Thursday), in your beneficiary profile |
| Attempts | Five within three years; a sixth attempt is allowed three years after your first test |
| Score you need | No single pass mark: each university or programme sets its own minimum |
Because attempts are limited and each costs SAR 100, do not book before you know your level. The score that matters is the one your own university asks for. For example, Prince Sultan University asks for at least 50%, and applicants below that are placed in its intensive English course. That is one university's rule.
Common questions
Is the test available at any time? Yes. It is digital and available all year, with registration open all year, so there is no registration window to wait for.
Can I retake it if I do not like my score? Yes. You get five attempts in three years, and each attempt costs SAR 100.
Is the EPT the same as STEP? No. The EPT is a placement test that costs SAR 100, and STEP is a proficiency test that costs SAR 150 inside Saudi Arabia. See what the test covers and its weights.
